National Artist Residencies
National Artist Residency - Recital Program with School Outreach
The Marilyn Horne Foundation sends vocalists nationwide for four-day residencies, each providing mini-recitals to school children grades 1 - 12 followed by a formal recital in the community. Each residency is accomplished by partnering with a community-based concert presenter, music festival or college. MHF then awards a grant to the presenting partner, helping them to overcome the financial hurdles of presentation costs.
Before the artist performs in community schools, MHF sends teachers a CD of the songs to be performed, texts/translations of the songs, and the artist’s biography to prepare the students. The artist then performs an interactive “mini-recital” of classical song with a discussion about the art form and the artist’s life as a professional performer. Teachers and students complete a follow-up survey to help gauge increase of understanding and appreciation of classical song and vocal recitals.
Since its inception through the 2006-2007 season, the MHF has collaborated with 44 concert presenters nationwide to co-present artist residencies.
In 2006-07 the MHF co-presented 15 residencies reaching 5,163 school children in 47 schools and 3,514 through 15 community-based recitals.
Marilyn Horne Foundation education programs nationwide are made possible by a grant from the Claire Giannini Fund.
