Supertitles
In an effort to enhance the comprehension and enjoyment of song texts for its recital audiences, the Marilyn Horne Foundation inaugurated the use of supertitles in January 2002 at its Annual Recital, which took place at the Peter J. Sharp Theater at The Juilliard School. The audience was invited to complete a questionnaire concerning the supertitles experience. The large majority of the audience responded with extremely positive comments – and since then the MHF has used supertitles at all of its New York City recitals, as well as at several of its artist residency venues. As of the 2007-08 season, supertitles will be used at all of the MHF’s artist-residency final recitals. It is the hope of Ms. Horne and the MHF that supertitles may ultimately do for song recitals what they have done for opera, attracting a growing public to the opera house or theater for live performances of opera.
